The Cave of Hopelessness was a tunnel located within Cornwood. It was named after its founder, Reginald Hopelessness, who was known for being the first man eaten alive by the cave's resident Tunneling Horror. The Fellowship was forced to traverse the cave as their only route to the Geysers of Gygax.
Other than the Tunneling Horror, the cave is inhabited by Morcs and a giant crustacean-like monster, the latter of which was briefly mistaken by the Fellowship to be the Tunneling Horror. The entrance of the cave is guarded by an ogre usher, who was seduced by Gynecaladriel to allow the Fellowship to pass.
